Joint Discussion on "Future Transportation, Future Energy": 2025 World New Energy Vehicle Congress (UAE Chapter) Successfully Convenes

The 2025 World New Energy Vehicle Congress (UAE Chapter) was held in Abu Dhabi on May 20. Attendees included Wan Gang, Chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology and the World New Energy Vehicle Congress; H.E. Suhail Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure; Feng Fei, Secretary of the Hainan Provincial Party Committee; Zhang Yiming, Chinese Ambassador to the UAE; Gauri Singh, Deputy Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA); H.E. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World; Omar Al Futtaim, Chairman of Al Futtaim Group; Zhou Wenbiao, Member of the Leading Party Members’ Group and Director-General of the General Office of the China Association for Science and Technology; and Mohamed Al Hosani, Executive Director of Public Transport Affairs at the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Centre, among others.

Chairman Wan Gang delivered a keynote speech, emphasizing that addressing climate change and accelerating the low-carbon green transformation of economies and societies is a shared choice for nations worldwide. Building a new energy system centered on renewable energy will support the sustainable development of national economies. Accelerating the electrification, intelligence, and decarbonization of the automotive industry will achieve a win-win scenario for low-carbon transformation and industrial upgrading. He highlighted China’s innovations in photovoltaic, wind power, and energy storage infrastructure, which have driven comprehensive development in agriculture, industry, and fisheries. The automotive industry’s shift toward electrification and intelligence is reshaping supply chains and ecosystems, broadening industrial boundaries, and fostering a modernized automotive cluster characterized by innovation, data-driven collaboration, resilience, and sustainability. China is advancing coordinated development in power batteries, charging infrastructure, renewable energy, and autonomous driving. Wan Gang stressed the importance of deepening international cooperation to accelerate the growth of the new energy vehicle (NEV) market. With unprecedented opportunities in the UAE’s NEV sector, Chinese companies must tailor products and services to local climatic conditions and market preferences, achieving mutual benefits through technology and capital collaboration. Globally, initiatives like the Belt and Road and RCEP should be leveraged to support green, low-carbon, safe, and intelligent development, particularly in the Global South.

Secretary Feng Fei shared Hainan’s green practices as a free trade port, detailing measures for customs closure and the construction of an ecological civilization pilot zone. Hainan has vigorously developed green energy, with clean energy accounting for over 80% of installed capacity, targeting 94% by 2035. The Boao Dongyu Island Zero-Carbon Demonstration Zone has achieved a 99% carbon reduction. Hainan’s NEV market penetration rate stands at 58.2%, ranking first among Chinese provinces. The island also boasts a comprehensive infrastructure network, including a unified charging-swapping platform and a 5G-enabled vehicle-road-cloud coordination system. Leveraging free trade port policies, Hainan has deepened cooperation with the UAE, achieving a 30% increase in bilateral trade in 2024. Direct shipping routes between Yangpu Port and Abu Dhabi Port have reduced costs by 12% and cut transit times by 10-15 days, facilitating synergies in vehicle manufacturing and supply chains to accelerate global green transformation.

Ambassador Zhang Yiming noted that the UAE, as the first Middle Eastern and North African country to sign the Paris Agreement, prioritizes green transition and technological innovation, leading the region in NEV development. China-UAE collaboration in NEVs represents a strategic alignment. He proposed joint efforts in battery technology, charging infrastructure, autonomous driving, and hydrogen energy to build safer, smarter, and greener industrial chains. Such cooperation will advance bilateral industrial synergies and contribute to global sustainability.

Gauri Singh, Deputy Director-General of IRENA, underscored the urgency of scaling renewable energy deployment and energy efficiency to meet 2030 net-zero targets. Despite significant growth in global renewable capacity, a vast gap remains to achieve COP28’s goals of tripling renewable capacity and doubling energy efficiency. China dominates 2024’s 585 GW of new renewable installations. By 2050, direct electrification will account for over 51% of the global economy, with hydrogen complementing electricity. However, electrification lags in transportation, heating/cooling, and heavy industries, necessitating systemic innovation in infrastructure, business models, and grid integration. She urged nations to follow China’s example in policy innovation and industrial collaboration.

Additional speakers included Sun Hanxing, Member of the Ruian Municipal Party Committee and Director of the Publicity Department; Li Sheng, Chairman of FAW Jiefang Co., Ltd.; Jeffrey X L Yu, Commercial and Business Development Manager of KEZAD Group; and Bao Huanhuan, Overseas Business Director of China Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co., Ltd., who discussed green transportation opportunities in the Middle East. Mohamed Al Hosani, Zhang Liang (General Manager of Baidu Intelligent Driving Europe and Middle East), and Rashed Al Mohtadi (Marketing Director of Kintsugi) addressed autonomous driving applications. Mohammed Maktari (CEO of NIO Middle East and North Africa), Zhang Chi (CEO of Guangdong Qingneng New Energy Technology), Li Hui (General Manager of Hexagon Purus Hydrogen Energy Development), Yang Angming (Strategic VP of TruKKer Technologies), and Qiao Taikong (General Manager of Mingyang Group’s Electro-Hydrogen-Ammonia-Methanol Industrial Center) spoke on clean energy adoption.

The event attracted over 200 global automotive stakeholders, fostering dialogue to advance China-UAE collaboration in smart energy, intelligent transportation, and industrial innovation, paving the way for an open, integrated, and sustainable automotive future.
